Crystal C. Chow

Biography

An aspiring environmental journalist and climate communicator in the Greater China region, Crystal Chow is an award-winning Hong Kong journalist and writer with 6 years of experience in covering Southeast Asian affairs, China-African relations, climate change, and development issues worldwide. 

Having reported various stories in developing and postcolonial context, her interests involve clean energy innovation, political transition, sustainable development, and marine environmental governance in the Asia Pacific and Africa. She also has a background in policy research and political communication.

Crystal currently works for the Stand News as a Science & Environmental Reporter. She has previously worked for Initium Media, a prominent digital media that targets Chinese-speaking readers worldwide, as an International News Reporter. In 2016, she was competitively selected as an international fellow of the EJN's CCMP program to cover the COP22 to the UNFCCC in Marrakesh. She has also been receiving support from the Johannesburg-based Africa-China Reporting Project, and has notably covered an investigative story on the illegal abalone trade in South Africa and its connections to the Chinese market. She is recently awarded the Human Rights Press Award 2017 under the "Chinese Feature News Merit" category for her story on the rise of the then-presidential frontrunner Rodrigo Duterte in the 2016 Philippine General Election.

Crystal holds an MSc in Global Energy and Climate Policy, with an elective in International Environmental Law, from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and is also a Climate and Environmental Policy Editor affiliated with the Politheor: European Policy Network.
