Where Science Meets Politics
Peter Bjerregaard - 05-Dec-2012
By Peter Bjerregaard In Italy six seismologists have just been convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict a 2009 earthquake that killed 309 people in the Italian city L'Aquila. The verdict is interesting for several reasons. It presupposes that scientists have the ability not only to look through the Earth's crust but to look into the future. But what would happen if a group of scientists -- for example the UN Climate Panel -- actually gave unambiguous forecasts of impending catastrophes...

Cumbre Río+20: Decisiones con sabor a poco
Giovanny Vera Stephanes - 02-Jul-2012
Rio+20 in the eyes of journalists
Hongxiang Huang - 02-Jul-2012
After Copenhagen and so on, people are more and more disappointed at mega climage talks and therefore less and less interested in them. In eyes of international journalists, Rio+20 is not a easy place to discover good stories, knowing that there is not going to be breakthrough. But this itself is a good story: the lack of attention is calling for attention.
Rio+20: Cities bring sustainability to sub-national level
Lidija Grozdanic - 28-Jun-2012
Few urban settlements outside the South American continent exhibit such visible thirst for space as Brazil’s Cidade Meravilhosa. The vortex of mixtures and coexisting extremes, permeating all aspects of Rio de Janeiro’s life, creates an urban continuity glued together by a single unifying force – the desire to live in the city. Clinging to steep hill slopes, burdened by poverty and low infrastructure, informal settlements are pulsating tentacles of the urbanscape, reminding the Rio...
Não o fim, mas um novo começo
Maristela Crispim - 27-Jun-2012

The Sustainability of “Feminine” Thinking : Women Leaders' Summit on the Future Women Want
Lidija Grozdanic - 25-Jun-2012
Prominent women leaders, gathered at the Rio+20 side event on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, have branded the predominant women empowerment mechanisms, operating mainly through aid programs, as anachronistic. Refusing to be seen as yet another vulnerable group, women insist on being part of the decision-making process. The question of female participation in sustainable decision making, defined by geopolitical circumstances, but universal in the lack of cohesive framework...

Rio + 20 The Earth Summit Revisited

In 1992 officials from countries around the world gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the Earth Summit to tackle the biggest environmental issues of the day. Twenty years later, many of the same challenges still remain. Negotiators and delegates made some incremental progress at Rio +20 but much of the real action around the world is happening at the community level.
