As community-based conservation takes off in Vietnam, challenges remain

Across Vietnam, communities are engaging in initiatives that aim to protect biodiversity while also fostering local economic development. In one project, in Cham Island, the community is finding that saving crabs brings rich tourists and the boosts the local economy. In another, in Van Long Nature Reserve, local people are helping save one of the world’s rarest monkeys and benefitting from new, better-paid, jobs.

Plenty of positive stories are emerging about such community-based conservation. But challenges remain, and unless they are addressed the communities could become victims of their own success.
