Covering COP29

Scroll to read more

As part of the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) program, 20 in-person fellows have been selected to attend and report on COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 9 to 24, 2024. Seven virtual fellows will be covering this year's climate summit remotely.

The CCMP COP29 Reporting Fellowship program is co-organized by Internews’ EJN and the Stanley Center. This year marks the sixth time the Stanley Center and EJN have collaborated on the CCMP fellowship program. Without such support, people in low- and middle-income countries—which bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing relatively little to global emissions—might have had to rely solely on global wire services for news about UN climate negotiations. The fellowship enables these audiences to access climate information and learn how these multilateral decisions will affect them, in languages they understand and media outlets they trust.

The 20 fellows covering COP29 on the ground in Baku will participate in orientation activities, daily briefings, interviews with high-level officials, and other interactions organized by the Stanley Center and EJN to inform and facilitate quality reporting on developments and outcomes at COP29. The fellows will receive support and guidance from seasoned climate journalists affiliated with EJN’s global network of trainers.

The seven virtual fellows will also participate in an orientation workshop and daily briefings. They will receive training, mentorship and personalized support from media trainers to facilitate remote reporting on the conference.

Note: In recognition of the emissions produced by air travel, the Earth Journalism Network has committed to purchasing carbon offsets to reduce its impact when staff and Fellows must travel as part of their work, which we believe is essential in this case. Although offsets may not be an ideal solution, we do carefully review and verify that the organizations from which we choose to procure them meet international standards. When possible, we aim to support projects in regions and communities where we regularly work. These efforts are in line with broader Internews' policy and commitment to the environment.

Shining a Light on the Path to Net Zero: Boosting Journalism on the Energy Transition

flyer for event

Are you in Baku, Azerbaijan for COP29? We held an official side event on energy reporting!

As countries shift to low-carbon development, the media can either serve as a hindrance or a crucial source of information, accountability and solutions. Research shows there is strong interest among journalists for training and support in how to cover the energy transition and to improve understanding of the many potential benefits and obstacles.

What strategies can journalists use to strengthen their reporting and better inform the public and policy-makers, and how can they counter the growing tide of misinformation?

Internews' Earth Journalism Network and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security convened a panel of journalists from multiple countries to discuss their reporting on renewable energy and the energy transition, connecting the view from the ground to the discussions at COP and beyond.

The panel was introduced by James Fahn, Executive Director, Earth Journalism Network and co-organizer of the Climate Change Media Partnership Reporting Fellowship.

Two of our CCMP Fellows also took part in a discussion on the essential role of media in telling the solar story.

This session, hosted by the International Solar Alliance, explored how journalists can help convey the power of solar energy to fuel growth, promote environmental protection, and address global challenges.

CCMP Fellows Chatula Kampo Kangali from Zambia and Aramis Castro from Peru were part of this panel discussion on solar storytelling, exploring both the challenges and opportunities in covering the energy transition.

They emphasized the urgency and transformative potential of solar energy in tackling climate challenges.
