Vanessa Rato

Biography

Vanessa Rato is a freelance journalist, writer and speaker. Born in Luanda, Angola, in 1975, she's been based in Lisbon since 1993. From 1998 to 2016 she was staff journalist and features editor for Portuguese reference daily newspaper Público, extensivelly reporting from all throughout Europe, Africa and both northern and southern America. In early 2016 she moved on to freelancing, collaborating with a growing number of Portuguese and international publications. Her main areas of interest are environment, development, governance, colonial history and postcolonialism, race and gender issues, contemporary art, creative non-fiction and narrative journalism. She is a Rockefeller Foundation fellow.
