Aleksander Gurgul

Aleksander studied journalism, American studies and Latin American studies at Jagiellonian University - Poland's oldest university. He later completed an internship in New York at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland. He has worked at Gazeta Wyborcza since 2014, but has also published in Tygodnik Powszechny, Magazyn Miasta and Autoportret. He has also worked on international stories for Gazeta Wyborcza, including in Costa Rica, the United States and the Galápagos Islands, among other places. 

In 2021 he founded the Climate and Environment team at Gazeta Wyborcza, which he later headed. He also serves as an investigative journalist, primarily concerned with forest management and its politicization in Poland. He authored the book "Podhale. Everything for Sale." ("Podhale. Wszystko na sprzedaż"). 

Aleksander was a Fellow of the Washington think tank Atlantic Council and contributor to the Transatlantic Media Network. In 2018, at the invitation of the International Center for the Journalists, he covered the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, organized by California Governor Jerry Brown. He has covered the annual UN climate summits since COP24 in Katowice, Poland, as well as the 41st UNESCO session in Krakow, Poland in 2017. In 2022, he was awarded a grant by the European Climate Foundation to travel to the United States and report on energy transition, primarily from coal to renewables. In 2024, he received a scholarship from IJP Internationale Journalisten-Programme e.V. to travel to Germany. Also in 2024, he was awarded a CCMP Fellowship from the Earth Journalism Network to cover COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In his free time, Aleksander often hikes in the Tatra Mountains, the Gorce Mountains and the Pieniny Mountains.
