Biography

Cece Siago is a young female journalist based in Mombasa, the Coast of Kenya. She has four years of experience in reporting on general stories. She however has an area of focus which is climate reporting, she also has a keen interest in reporting on wildlife and conservation. She has worked at the Nation Media Group for the last four year since she began practicing journalism. Siago is a print and digital journalist who works on multimedia stories published in both Swahili and English. She is interested in learning data journalism and incorporating the data in the stories to yield more impact.

Siago has previously worked on a story on climate change being the cause of a disappearing fresh water lake in Lamu, a county in the Coast of Kenya. In this story, she likes to the fears of residents for losing such a key resource, but also the threat to biodiversity. She has also written stories about how communities in Kwale County are restoring mangroves plantations while gaining from carbon trade through the sale of carbon credits. In this community project dubbed Mikoko Pamoja, locals who majority are fishermen do not just enjoy the high yields of fish, but also get access to basic needs such as water and better buildings for the local schools in the area repaired from the proceeds of the carbon trade which is gaining momentum in Kenya.

Siago is bachelor of journalism and mass communication graduate from the Technical University of Mombasa. She has also engaged in various online fellowships training on Open Source Investigation and, climate tracking.
