Biography

Choulay Mech is a freelance journalist for Voice of Democracy, an independent news outlet in Cambodia. she covers the environment and animal rights issues, topics she has a passion for. She has a strong background in photography and video production, and spent one year in extensive training for documentary film production at the Bophana Audiovisual Resources Center. She directed a short film, “My Home” telling the story of elephant conservation in Mondulkiri.

In 2020, she received an award from Creative Generation 3 Awards. She has received numerous grants for filming and reporting, including Angkor Photo Festival in Cambodia, Citizen Engaged in Environmental Justice for all (CEEJA), and SUMERNET for media

Choulay describes herself as part of the next generation of Cambodians who want to raise the voice of the voiceless. She is passionate about the Mekong River and she appreciates the beauty of its sparkling water and the essential resources that it provides to millions of people.
