Edwin Suárez is a social communicator and journalist with over eight years' experience in the journalistic field. He is the founder and director of the newspaper El Morichal, a media outlet that covers current affairs, health, education, politics, and daily life in the regions of Guainía and Vichada. During his professional career, Edwin has worked with media outlets such as CNN Chile (Santiago, Chile), a community channel in Bogotá, Canal Uno, the News of the House of Representatives, and various collaborations for written media such as Semana and El Espectador. Since 2016, he has been the director of the newspaper El Morichal, through which he has given a voice to the vulnerable communities of Guainía and Vichada. His reports are published in the print and digital versions of El Morichal, but have also served as important references for both national and regional press that do not have coverage in those regions of the country. Edwin’s independent journalistic work has earned him several grants to pursue honest and vulnerable journalism. In 2021, he received a grant from Internews to cover health topics associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. Following this grant, he was the 2022 scholarship recipient from 070 (the magazine of the University of the Andes) and covered, from the local perspective, the 2022 presidential elections. He has also received two scholarships from Consejo de Redacción (an organization that promotes journalism in Colombia) to cover environmental and health topics.
