Mara Budgen is a Tokyo-based freelance journalist specialising in sustainability and development. She has written for the Japan Times, LifeGate and Gastro Obscura, is a member of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan and holds a Master’s in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge.

She is former Head International Editor at LifeGate, an international sustainability-focused media network based in Milan, Italy, and former Editor-in-Chief of LifeGate.com.

She is specialised in multimedia storytelling, with a focus on socio-environmental stories. In 2020, she produced a written feature and documentary about the impacts of climate change and mega dams on indigenous tribes in the Lower Omo Valley in Ethiopia. In 2021, she covered the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including producing articles and videos about LGBTQ athletes and the environmental impact of the event, and worked as a social media officer for the Paralympic Games.

In Japan, she has investigated topics such as the struggle for the indigenous Ainu’s cultural preservation, Japan’s exposure to climate risks, and the impacts of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
