Shamsheer Yousaf is an independent journalist based in Bangalore, India, with over 15 years of experience. He primarily covers stories on ecology, science, and technology, but has also reported on politics, education, and gender and religious discrimination.
Shamsheer specializes in longform multimedia stories, where he shoots and edits photos and video, designs data visualizations, and writes longform pieces. His work has appeared in Scroll, The Wire, South China Morning Post, Fountain Ink, and Factor Daily. Previously, he worked as a staff reporter at Mint, Deccan Herald, and The New Indian Express.
He has received reporting grants from the Earth Journalism Network, Pulitzer Center, Oxpecker-GITOC, Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, and the Society of Environmental Journalists. He was shortlisted for the Lorenzo Natali Media Prize in 2015 by the European Commission. He won the Red Ink Award in 2015 in the Science & Innovation category and received two Special Mentions for the Red Ink Award in 2019 in the Crime and Science & Innovation categories.
Most recently, Shamsheer has reported two in-depth investigations in environmental crime. The first one explored the illegal shark fin smuggling network in India and its connections to South East Asia. The second piece looked at the illegal sand mining ‘mafias’ in North India, and the environmental havoc and human cost as gunfights break out amongst competing gangs.
