Smitha TK is a versatile journalist with over nine years of experience covering a wide range of topics. She specializes in politics, environment, civic issues, law, human interest, gender, disasters, arts, business, sports and entertainment, and her expertise spans across South India, providing unique insights into the region's complex issues.
Smitha began her journey in journalism at Hindustan Times in 2015 before transitioning into broadcast media, where she worked at NDTV Prime/Profit and NDTV 24x7. She contributed to a weekly show on real estate and civic issues and reported for primetime news shows, covering significant events such as the 2015 Chennai floods, 2016 Vardah cyclone, hospitalization and death of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa, and ensuing political crisis, the national wheelchair basketball team and Jallikattu protests in Tamil Nadu. She then moved into the digital space as a one-woman army at The Quint, where she handled the reporting, research, camerawork and editing for all her stories for the five and a half years. She has extensively covered the Kerala floods in 2018, water crisis in Tamil Nadu, anti-Sterlite protests, advocacy for the rights of differently-abled and LGBTQIA+ community, #MeToo movement and elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Smitha's work has earned her the prestigious title of social media ambassador 2023 for the Global Landscapes Forum, the world's largest platform for sustainable and inclusive landscapes. Her recent investigative piece on the water crisis in Chennai and the need for sustainable solutions received critical acclaim, and her documentary even won the award for best use of aerial videography by VDONXT.
As a journalist, Smitha has made a significant impact with her stories, touching the lives of countless people. For instance, her coverage of a blind couple struggling to make ends meet during COVID resulted in financial aid of Rs 6 lakhs, and her report on a fisherman coaching girls living in a Chennai fishing hamlet helped him set up his academy, providing education to the girls. After her story was published, stranded students in Visakhapatnam could return home during the pandemic, and she even brought international recognition to women from Delhi's slums who created embroidered hoops. Her series of investigative pieces on the anti-Sterlite protests and the shutting down of Vedanta's copper smelter company received a lot of appreciation and were published on People's Weekly.
Smitha holds a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism from the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.
