Biography

Xilena Pinedo is a science journalist based in Peru. Since June 2021, she has been working on the coverage of science, health and environmental issues at OjoPúblico, one of the most important digital investigative media in Latin America. In addition, she is part of the sixth generation of young journalists from Distintas Latitudes. Previously, in 2020, she worked at La República as a fact-checker verifying information about Covid-19. She was a founder of the digital media of scientific journalism BichoRaro. In 2022, she was selected by the Simbiosis organization to participate in the theoretical-practical workshop on narrative journalism taught by the Argentine journalist Leila Guerriero. In 2021, she was selected by the Fundación Gabo de Periodismo to take the workshop "Immersion in science journalism: a method to mistrust". Also, she is a fluent English and Portuguese speaker. Finally, one of her stories that generated the greatest impact was a report about the inclusion and recognition of indigenous knowledge in scientific research, which allowed her to participate in the Science Journalism Forum and, above all, led her to recount the main findings of the investigation and the relevance of this topic to medical students from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH).
