In 2022, climate leaders and negotiators reached a landmark decision during the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Egypt. After years of debate, higher-income countries reluctantly agreed to contribute to a “Loss and Damage Fund” fund that would help low-income countries grapple with the negative impacts of climate disasters.
That story, and many others, will continue to play out this year in Dubai at COP28. But many experts say there’s still something missing from the conversation: adaptation.
Marine and coastal ecosystems provide vital ecosystem services to coastal communities, services that are increasingly under threat as climate change accelerates impacts like sea level rise and coastal erosion. While the world debates mitigation and Nationally Determined Contributions, local communities are already grappling with the losses of these services and ecosystems. How can journalists at COP28 and elsewhere better cover adaptation efforts — or the lack thereof?
