COP19 Warsaw Live Blog, Day 1

Today’s opening session was marked by Naderev Sano’ tears for the 10.000 victims of typhoon Haiyan. During the opening session, the Philippine Climate Change Commissioner announced his hunger strike until concrete progress is made. “What my country is going through as a result of this extreme climate event is madness. The climate crisis is madness” he declared.

Developing countries are seeking a commitment from their richer partners in terms of financial support, which seems to be on of the leading thread of COP19. On the other hand, loss and damage has been presented as the only viable option to address the adverse effects of climate change.

Small islands developing states (SIDS) are asking for stronger attention on sea level rise, phenomenon confirmed by IPCC Fifth assessment Report, presented by Mr. Pachauri. A post-2015 agenda for oceans protection goals, both I terms of sustainable use and conservation, is under discussion.
