7 EJN Grantees to Produce Video Stories on Renewable Energy in India
In 2023, the global installation of renewable energy recorded the fastest rate of expansion in the past 25 years, the growth of renewable energy around the world hit a 25-year high, a study by International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed. Setting the goal higher, when heads of state gathered at the G20 Conference held in India in September 2023, they pledged to triple global renewable capacity by 2030. A wider international commitment to this goal was seen at COP28, with 123 countries signing the Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge in Dubai at the end of the year.
If achieved, this single step could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by seven billion tons by 2030.
For India, this would require investments of USD 293 billion, according to global energy think tank, Ember. Over the next few years, journalists and communicators’ grasp of the technological, financial and policy challenges related to renewable energy expansion will be key to keeping the public well informed.
To meet this need, Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, through its Renewable Energy in India project has awarded story grants to these seven independent journalists, who will produce in-depth and engaging video stories on issues ranging from the growing biofuel market in rural Bihar to the potential of repowering of wind turbines in Tamil Nadu.

“Renewable energy projects are starting to bloom across the country, but there is still immense scope for expansion. Communicating [the potential of decarbonization] in an audiovisual format will be a big help,” said EJN’s India manager Joydeep Gupta.
